My writing comes from within me, when I feel hurt, happy, sad, or mad I write. I feel that writing helps me release feelings or say things that I would not say to the person in order to not hurt them, but at the same time my writing helps me say what I may want to say instead of holding all my feelings inside. Whenever I am writing, I am in a quiet place where I know I will not be bothered and it seems now with no time on my hands I write less, high was the best time I had because I wrote poems and read different books and it seems I never have the time to do that any more, I guess with all the distrations and things that enter our world that is just one less thing to do. I find writing calms me and thinking about where I am , what changes can I make in my life or just in general writing just to get it out. Writing is a form of expression and either if you are good or bad putting words on paper can actually bring out what’s going on inside of you and just having fun and experiment with the joys of putting a story together about someone you love or hate. Outside by a tree smelling the clean fresh air, making that pencil hit that paper as if it was etched all ready and you can see the words you what to create and imagine. This is where my writing comes from ME.

Lifeboat Ethics: The case against helping the poor (by9Garrett Hardin)

In the essay by Garrett Hardin the case Against Helping the Poor, introduces his writing by using a lifeboat as a metaphor, only 50 can fit in the lifeboat and it has the capacity to hold 10 more people. As you observe more people in the ocean asking for people to get in the life boat, its going to lead you to either all drown or these 100 people 90 will perish if they allow 10 people in the lifeboat. He is giving a ethical dilemma to the his readers whether or not the people in the life boat give up their seats or let those people dye. Helping the poor should not be a hard position to take; but how to help the poor may be a conflict, due to people have different ideas. Harding is giving the foundation that the poor multiply faster than the wealthy. With the statistics that Hardin gives are not very accurate and seems to spill out numbers from the top of his head.

As Hardin continues to give his opinion concerning the poor, he points out the that the push for a World food bank, where this would be a depository for nations would contribute to their abilities and draw from it when needed, put would this actually fix the issues of poor in all countries. With the cost of food prices increasing and other factors such as a lack of people giving, this idea may not go along with all nations. As he also points out who will benefit the most from these programs, manufacturers of farm machinery, fertilizers and pesticides in the enough to produce more food. Learning from the pass is an idea that Hardin feels that the government has not put to good use, when he compares the policy that Joseph taught to the pharaoh over 2000 years ago.

Hardin gives that examples of the environment over loaded due our population, nations in the past that gain an average of there population each year.  Population and environmental issues have always been an issue of ours, the need to produce an abundance of food or the population has increased over the yrs. Are there ways to accomplish feeding the needy without going broke, I think the ideas are there but just have not either tapped into it?

The most interesting relationships are the people that you are working with, no matter how much you may not want to, people are every where. In today’s world we come in contact with people we associate with at work and sometimes it’s not always a lovely idea. When working on a job, you have supervisors and upper management that has the ability to make a change in the job you do or the salaries you make. Most upper management are only out for their own benefit and achievements. When thinking about the attitudes of these people, you may have mixed feelings regarding the people you may deal due to the fact that they are not always on your side.
Now saying that the working relationship I have with two of my co-workers helps me get though the day. I currently work for Cox Communications as a technical support rep. My job is to troubleshoot problems that businesses have with there phone cable and internet support .My co-workers Alecia and Anna are good people. They are hard, honest workers. Each time there is a problem with dealing with irate customers Alecia and Anna are there to assist with the problems. They Walk the customers though their problems by asking them questions. Team work is needed in an enviroment that requires multiple tasks such as researching customer accounts for the purpose of billing, refunds, torubleshooting, and escalations.

Carr Vs Shirky

In this article of Nichols Carr, Is Google making Us Stupid. Carr is stating that with search engines such as Google is giving people faster ways to inquiry information, but are we really retaining all this information at the touch of a finger? Carr is claiming that due to the fact that we are able to access information at a faster rate is making us stupid. With his ability to concentrate and enjoyment in reading lengthy novels are no longer, due to the reprogramming of his mind. Carr’s reasons for this change is that the time we spend online searching and at the click of a mouse you can access any information that you may be looking for. Although the web maybe a excellent source to writer, Carr states that we spend more time scrolling different sites, emailing, or just surfing the internet. The ability to concentrate is due to the unorganized and swiftly ways that his mind has acquired the information online. With no long-term studies on how the internet will affect mind, the evidence is inconclusive, but with a five year research program at University College London found that when people log on to the internet, their habits of skimming and hopping from source to source was the affect of new term called “power browse”. As Wolf explains that reading on the net in different forms on is taking away of how we think and more of decoders of information. Carr’s explanation goes in depth and explains the history of how technology has helped but also has created a world of insufficient minds that can process information in a form that has taking away deeper readers and thinkers.

Although Shirky agrees with Carr to a certain level about how the media affects the nature of thought, he disagrees about how we should be doing about it. Shirky states that this article is about culture. The culture of reading novels such as war and peace was not due to the internet but how people found the novels long and uninteresting, which had nothing to do with how people gathered their sources. As Shirky explains that the literary world is losing is normative on the culture and is the reason for Carr’s essay. Shirky feels that the challenge that we are facing is the same as what we faced in the 16th century with the printing press. We need to find ways to expand of expressive capability.

In reading these articles I agrees with Shirky, our society grows up on tv, radio and internet to keep them entertain. In the pass when there was no TV, or internet people put more focus on reading, plays or games that would stimulate the brain by more mental activity. The culture that our society see’s today are not about the discovering new literacy but who is doing who on this reality shows or surfing online not actually absorbing the information. The fact that Carr’s essay was speaking about how Google making us stupid, and point’s out some views of others, He gave a over all view how the media does affect the nature of thought. If we are able to challenge more minds today, it may bring more focus and less anxiety to our younger generations.

In reading the articles by Pinker and Chapman, Chapman seems to misunderstand want Pinker is saying about neonaticide. According to the term neonaticide means the homicide of an infant aged one week or less and with the reading of Pinker article is showing us the attention of how critical it is for us humans to take more of a responsibility of our actions. Although women are the primary decisions makers of neonaticide, we all have the moral obligations to assist a woman that has come to this point of their lives.Pinker first introduces his topic in a way that draws readers wanting more, which starts off saying “Killing your baby”, makes you wonder what about killing your baby? Pinker goes on to explain how young women decides to go with this chilling homicide of a killing a helpless child. Pinker’s description of this cruel and immoral act gives us a glimpse into the darker side of our human race. Do we really understand the state of mind of these women that commit these crimes?

Medically we can’t state that this is an illness, according to a study by Phillip Resnick, mentally the women don’t show signs of suicidal or depressed as do women that have killed older children. As we take a look at different cultures and limited resources, does this give women the right to kill or even if they are young and immature. As early as 2000 B.C. classic Chinese texts recall cases of infanticide and infant abandonment, with punishment for the offense dating back to 206 BC. In Greece, exposure of a newborn was not only permitted, but in some cases, especially in Sparta, it was enforced by law. The women that commit this act, tends to be young, poor or unmarried.

Pinker’s views in this article are telling us although these women are not monster but women that have made the decision that they are unable to change once it happens. The moral act should be society focusing the attention and teaching our young women on how to deal with an unwanted newborns and how to prevent it from happen at all. We all have choices and rights that we can act on. But are we really thinking about the human life when something like this is done.

Chapman’s views were the opposite of what Pinker was explaining. Chapman’s views of his article concerning Pinker, made Pinker look as if he was for neonaticide, which could be far from the truth. First Chapman states that survey’s and scientific studies is how our world is corrupt, not a frontal attack. Chapman’s view on how he views the article about the killing of babies shows us how the views of one person can change your opinion without realizing it. Chapman’s statements concerning Pinker’s the killing of babies even the word itself neonaticide gives a since that with every turn of a word, Pinker might as well say to readers “Kill them”.

We can’t place the blame on one man’s opinion and thoughts about a society that lacks the moral skills to give life and not to take it.

In Conclusion of these articles Pinker’s direct and indirect approach may have brought Chapman’s views in arguing that Pinker was stating that killing babies and having no moral actions is how Chapman viewed the article, Pinker’s views stood for more then what Chapman could understand. Pinker brought his article to view from a moral stand point and social.

When I was in the 9th grade I loved to write poetry, and read books from Eager Allen Poe, Mark Twain and Jack London to name a few. As I reflect back on my years in high school, writing was an important part of how I could express my thoughts and even as an adult it’s how I can let out my happy, angry or just playful thoughts out on paper . It has been a hard battle to writing, because at time the words don’t seem to come out how I am thinking they should. My biggest obstacle in writing is my grammar. In coming back to school on and off, I realize that I’m not going to be able to duck taking English class because it is very essential to my job, as well as going forward in the career path that I am also changing. My writing skills have actually improved due to the fact I finished taking English 111. With the knowledge learning different forms of writing and knowing that these skills will allow me to go further and create a future where I am able to be comfortable writing a paper, researching, and understanding not just the writer but how the writer is presenting his\her work.

My writing skills have made me more conscious about what I am writing, how I am writing, my spelling and grammar and being able to sit down and help my children with the work. I never felt comfortable writing essays and showing my working. I have stepped out my comfort zone and pushed my self to do better. And with the skills that I am learning going forward it has taught me more about myself in the process.

Ban on Smoking in Public RestaurantsWhy should there be a ban on smoking in public restaurants ? Who will benefit from this bill? How and will it effect patrons going to different restaurants? What, if any issues will it resolve? Should this be a issue that the government decides? What are the health issues? These are some of the questions that we are facing when you are thinking about banning smoking in a public areas that are not only for smokers but also non-smokers which are residing. Smoking seems to be more important than their own bodies. Smoking just seems to be in a sense a wasteful energy taker and gain nothing but a bad smell.

Growing up with a parent that smoked, and also seeing relatives dying from lung cancer and throat cancer was very hard to take hold of. With banning smoking in public restaurants or bars brings non- smokers to an environment that is smoke free so that they are able to enjoy with the time with their young children. Although the smoker is not in direct contact with the smoker, breathing it in is still as harmful which is called passive smoking. Lets think about someone that is smoking, and a family comes in with a younger child and now imagine that younger child is walking in to the restaurant with an cigarette in his\her mouth. This is exactly what the smoker is doing when he\she is entering in a public place that allows both smoker and non-smokers to come together. With more people today being health conscious about what goes in their babies, non-smokers and smokers will benefit from the ban of smoking in public restaurants. As parents we tell our kids not to smoke but we turn around and continue to live unhealthy lives. Smokers have the option to enter in a place that has smoking which pulls money from that establishment, does it matter? Maybe, maybe not, it all depends on how bad that business it willing to draw customers into their business. The issues of banning smoking would actually cause more people to wing themselves to quiet, find other social activities than meeting at the smoke stack in the cold, wet or 100° heat, save money, get rid the body of toxins that causes diseases that kill no matter how old you are. As we have noticed the government has taken steps to assist with people suffering illness caused by smoking so why should they not have a say in how this is played out since no one is concerned about the most important part of our society, and that is human beings. The fact that Elderly smokers experience a greater loss in the ability to think, perceive, and remember than people who never smoked or who have quit smoking. The mental decline of elderly smokers may be tied to silent strokes, very small strokes that go unnoticed. Smoking or exposure to cigarette smoke may also be linked to an increased risk of hearing loss. We need to do everything in our power to change the outlook of smoking in public restaurants.

Part II

When you stand against something as strong as this ongoing issue, their is always someone out there that is going to take a stronger stand. In many cases Banning smoking in public will merely cause people to smoke more at home. This would harm other people in their house, particularly children. This is important, since children are not old enough to choose freely to smoke passively. Also, people smoking at home may drink more alcohol than they would if they went to a bar. This is because they can buy it more cheaply at a supermarket or off-license. Drinking more alcohol may lead to other health problems. Although there are many people that may complain about smoking in public restaurants there are not enough complaints, so there is no need to start non-smoking bars or restaurants and with that respect a smoking ban would drive many bars and restaurants out of business. Smokers will not go to non-smoking places. These businesses would also earn less money from selling tobacco. In many places, pubs and Working Men’s Clubs are important social places for communities. They also provide jobs for people with few skills in places with little other work. It is therefore important that they survive. With the freedom that we have acquired, freedom of choice for someone to choose to take a smoke or not is a right that should not be regulated by the government. With so many issues about banning smoking in restaurants and protecting the rights of non-smokers many will continue to fight this fight, but who will win. Will this issue go up in smoke as well?

Part 1

I believe that people are more cautious to new ideas and the unknown
I believe that society focus to much on negative rather then positive
I believe that the government has it’s secrets and unworthy truths
I believe that justice comes with a price
I believe that knowledge is better when it’s shared among the eager mind
I believe that science is everything we come in contact with
I believe that reality is a changeable force and we have to adapt to
I believe that life brings it’s unforeseen events to make you stronger and a better human being
I believe that happiness starts from within first
I believe that goodness is a light in all of us
I believe that death is not taking life for granted
I believe that god shows his presence with love in us all

Part II

I believe that Death is not taking life for granted

How was my belief formed?

Never saying I love you to my grandmother
The illness of my younger sister

What have influenced or shaped my belief ?
The vibrant life of my 11 year old son that was crippled in his body at 18 months by cancer and my healthly sister.

How did these experiences lead me to my present position?
I never go without tell anyone that has touched my life positive or negative that I appreciate or love them

What effect does this specific belief have on the choices I make on a daily basis?
I want to treat people the way that I know that was installed in me and love to the fullness of my ability.  As I have grown and learned sometimes no matter what you do can make everyone happy.  I have learned and understood that everyone has a choice about how to treat someone else.  No matter what someone may choose to do you have to know that within yourself that you were created to bring either brief joy in someone life or just a minute smile to brighten someone’s day I can’t say that I don’t care if someone does not understand the way I am but I can say I can walk away and say that I give my best, because it takes more energy to be upset then happy.

Part III

How would I describe one of the positions held by people who might disagree with me?

People may say that they are just going though the motions on a daily basis nothing seems to change in there life.

What past experience do people on the opposing side seem to share?

That they are so focus on jobs, careers, bills, and being materialistic and self centered they miss out on the everyday joys of life. Depression and other mental illness can lead people in wanting to take there life because they have nothing to live for or feel a disconnect from society. Not understand how it’s going to affect their loved ones, they feel a since of hopelessness and this is something that brings them to conflict within.

How do their experiences seem to differ from mine?

People that seem to take life for granted spend more time trying to obtain materialistic objects instead of spending time with loves ones, giving a hand to a stranger, trusting someone or even just taking a nice scroll along the beach. They are more focus on acquiring things that have no real value.

Why might these experiences have led them to take their positions?

Maybe as growning up their parents  put more effort on working and providing and never having the time to relax, really laugh and enjoy life to the fullness. Not having the affection or showing them that it is more to life then working, material objects and how to cope or handle stress in daily life.

Is there a set of experiences shared in common by people on each side of the issue?

With life there will be a certain amount of stress, but with excess stress the body can suffer sleep disturbances, muscle tension, headaches, gastrointestinal disturbances, and fatigue. Emotional and behavioral symptoms that can accompany excess stress include nervousness, anxiety, changes in eating habits including overeating, loss of enthusiasm or energy, and mood changes

How do these differences influence how I will respond to their position on these issues?

Appreciating the small things in life and understand that it brings a better world, more closer to being a better person, and loving yourself even when things are not going so great. These in life brings change and a sense of unknown, we all know that one day death will but living each day as as if it was your last, makes you think more about appreciating the time you have on this earth and to enjoy each obstacle that comes your way no matter how hard it is. With life there is death in every aspect of life. Live Love and Appreciate Life.
